There will be a series of 3 interviews all with different managers from Desss Inc. The final decision will be made after these 5 managers decide on the best possible candidate.

We are looking for an individual who is more than just book smart. We are looking for an individual who has that unique ability to develop business and think outside the box. Business is nothing more than clever strategizing and execution of such strategies. The people that come out on top are the ones that are aware of new and unique business models coming up. Someone who keeps tab on the latest startups, whether from the US, Europe or India, would be able to develop a profitable business model. You should be familiar with other business and revenue models.

Background: Social Evening (www.socialevening.com) is a project started by Desss Inc. (www.desss.com). Desss is engaged in software and application development. Our largest clients are British Petroleum and El Paso and our revenue in 2012 was about $75.55mm with 70% profit margins. Social Evening was created for the purpose of entering consumer internet and bring our revenue close to $100mm mark.

Objective of Social Evening Project: Helping bars and restaurants generate more foot traffic on a slow business day (S, M, T, W, Th). Of course in order to get foot traffic, the end consumer has to be involved in the process.

Revenue Model: We charge the bars and restaurants a monthly subscription fee ranging from $500-$700/month. Each city can yield 75-100 bars and restaurants as clients. With about 40 large cities in the United States alone, we are targeting $15mm-$20mm in yearly revenue.  The profit margins in this business are approximately 60%. The main expenses are the cost of the sales person who sells our service to bars and restaurants. Other expenses include office overhead, team of analysts and managers, etc.

Sales Model: Our expertise is sales. We have perfected our sales model and we have successfully implemented our sales strategies to sell bars and restaurants on our concept and have collected payments from these clients.

Our offer to bars and restaurants: “We will drive to traffic to your establishment on a slow day.” Normally, slow days for bars and restaurants are Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We promise bars and restaurants that we will drive traffic to their business on just 1 slow per month in exchange for that subscription fee of $500-$700/month. We tell clients that they can expect 25-30 customers on a slow day that they choose. So to have just 25-30 customers on just 1 day per month, the bar/restaurant is willing to pay $500-$700 per month! That’s huge.

Your Challenge: As an applicant, we are going to present to you some unique business issues. Those candidates who our analysts predict will provide best value will be called for interviews.

Challenge #1: What is the easiest way to send 25-30 customers to a bar or a restaurant?

Important: Do NOT suggest TV, radio, newspaper advertising, etc. Those are obsolete methods and are more of a long term strategy. Besides, we are charging only $500-$700/month to drive foot traffic on one day, so it would be difficult to engage in some type of advertising. But if you have any better ideas, describe them.

The business is simple and very straight forward, yet difficult to achieve. 25-30 customers on just 1 day for the whole month in return for $500 sounds very lucrative, but it’s tough to achieve. If you were hired, what would you do to achieve the goal of satisfying this requirement of 25-30 people?

Challenge #2: To put things in perspective, we have executed the following strategies:

Hired models and extremely social people in expectation that they would be able to bring 25-30 of their friends. Assumption here was that a highly social person or beautiful model would have access to a large number of people and would have very little trouble bringing 25-30 people. We used 1 model/social person for 1 client. The fee for this model/social person was $80-$100 for them to be present at the bar/restaurant and bring/invite their friends.

1. The issue with hiring models and these extremely social people is their credibility. They turned out to be flaky with last minute cancellations. 2 Those who went forward were unable to deliver. It’s also a very laborious task of placing calls to dozens of these socialites and scheduling the events. These increase our operating costs. In hindsight, giving the person the responsibility of inviting 25-30 friends on a random weeknight seems tough.

Any solution that achieves the goal of bringing 25-30 people on just one night is fine. Considering Social Evening as a separate project, we always are willing to keep the business model flexible so that it can be changed on a whim.

Challenge #3: Assuming  you start from scratch, what comes to your mind in driving just 25-30 people to a bar/restaurant? It’s not a huge ask to satisfy the client. But this business will survive and thrive on repeat business as the business keeps resubscribing month after month.

Send your answers in a word document to info@socialevening.com. Be detailed with your thought process to show us your analytical thought process. Copy and paste each challenge and write down your proposals. Your proposals will be viewed by roughly 5 different analysts at Desss Inc. The most highly recommended ones will be awarded with interviews for further in depth discussions.

Remember, creativity is the name of the game here, so let your mind and put your business hat on. You must have the ability to think outside the box and think of strategies that are easy to execute. Good luck.
